calls out for the missing Top Gallant.
Toby remembers his father's words (DO YOU SEE THE STARS).

Susanna departs the Jack Rose Tap
with her payoff for stealing Top Gallant.
Captain Mardocke fetches a saw to
expose the ship’s design. While he is
absent, Toby stealthily enters and grabs
Top Gallant, just as an alarmed Swain
Dawkins nearly shoots a blind-sided
Mardocke. Toby escapes over
a trellis, encountering Nick, who is
searching for Susanna. Nick gives
Toby a gunnysack to keep Top Gallant
safe from thieves. They go their
separate paths (THE MOON IS HIGH).

      In Captain Mardocke's quarters,
Susanna accuses Mardocke of
committing deadly harm against Toby's
father. She draws her knife. Mardocke
claws the knife away, shoving it to
Sparrow. Susanna is hustled away. In a
rage, Mardocke bribes Winslow’s two
town constables to capture Toby (FIND ME THE BOY REPRISE (I)).

      Susanna, captive in a shuttered
room, rejects Captain Mardocke's
bracelet, determined to rebel against
his schemes (TELL ME).

      Cecilia hosts a glittering ball
(GOOD DAY, CECILIA! REPRISE / SWEET MELODY). A surprise guest,
Pierceton Asheley, Cecilia's father,
enters and demands to know Toby’s
whereabouts. A quick-witted Mayor
Risello rouses party-goers to interrupt
(MASSACHUSETTS YANKEE). Toby
suddenly bursts in, chased by the town
constables and Sparrow. Townspeople
renew a bidding war for Toby.
Pierceton expresses outrage. Order is
restored when it is rumored a model of
Top Gallant is in Toby's gunnysack.
The bag is opened, but Top Gallant is
missing. A vengeful Sparrow confronts
Toby with Susanna's knife. Desperately
wresting the knife from Sparrow, Toby
dashes away, pursued by townspeople.

By the island spit, Susanna protests
Nick's advances (DON'T PRETEND, LET’S SUPPOSE). Captain Mardocke
enters and captures Nick. Mardocke
rewards a stunned Susanna with a fine
necklace. Nick accuses Susanna of
setting him up to be shanghaied.

Townspeople chase Toby (ISLAND PURSUIT). Captain Mardocke's ship
Black Bess swings into view. Toby and
Mardocke, at cross purposes, implore
the heavens (I WISH I HAD A FATHER REPRISE / TOP GALLANT THEME REPRISE (I)). Toby leaps onto Black
Bess out of sight. Mardocke orders a
desperate attempt to find Top Gallant
(FIND ME THE BOY REPRISE (II)).
Shanghaied sailors, led by Nick, mutiny.
Mardocke and his crew run off in
pursuit. Toby hears his father's voice
(WHEN YOU REACH FOR A STAR).
Susanna enters to warn Toby something
terrible has happened to his father.
Toby protests he has just heard from his
father (I’LL COME RUNNING WHERE YOU ARE).

      Captain Mardocke surprises the two.
After a chase, Toby spots Top Gallant in
the highest rigging. Mardocke disarms
Toby of Susanna’s knife and orders him
to climb to Top Gallant. A shouting
Mayor Risello and townspeople enter.
A shot rings out. Toby falls, caught by
a rope. Mardocke, victim of a bullet,
sinks. Cecilia waves a pistol she has
slipped from a constable's holster, and
faints.

Toby looks up at the rigging. Top
Gallant has vanished. Susanna reminds
Toby, if he can see the stars, and his
father can see the stars, then his father
has truly found him. Susanna entreats
Nick, asking if he might apprentice
Toby. Pierceton Asheley approves.
Chiding Cecilia, Pierceton reveals he
has discovered the lost plans for Top
Gallant hidden in her home. Mayor
Risello declares Winslow will build a
full-size Top Gallant. Toby, looking up
to where Top Gallant was last seen,
vows to fulfill his father's bold dreams
(A BIT OF BLADE REPRISE).

Toby stands alone on a windswept
hill (TOP GALLANT THEME REPRISE (II)). He gathers the objects
he pulled from his pockets on that early
yester-morning. Burning in the heavens,
Top Gallant appears as a brilliant fire of
fantasy and delight, of a child's dreams
and tribulations, of a childhood's magic
journey of life and death.
